Tom began practicing yoga in 2001 and by 2002 had settled on Ashtanga Yoga as his daily practice. He made his first trip to the yoga shala in India in 2004. Tom is an authorized level two Ashtanga Yoga teacher. He was authorized to teach in 2009 by Sharath Jois, and he began that year, at the generous invitation of Amy Webb, to teach at Sruti Yoga Center.
He believes in the advice offered by Krishnamacharya to “Teach what is within you. Not as it applies to you, but as it applies to the one in front of you.”
Tom is a professional photographer whose commercial career provided the skill and experience to turn effectively to capturing the yoga practice. During the span of ten years when he travelled to India to practice with his teachers Pattabhi Jois, Saraswati Jois, and Sharath Jois, he had the opportunity to photograph his teachers in action. Tom also created a series of yoga photos called “Sacred Space” which were photographed in historic, ancient temple sites and were designed to motivate and inspire, and connect the yoga practice with mother India. Some of these photos are on display at Sruti. He photographed in the yoga shala in Mysore and continues to document and support Sharath's worldwide teaching.
